Mid-week storm delivers! Sunshine returns this weekend!

Summary

The mid-week storm actually over-performed in the West-Central Mountains with Brundage getting 13" and Tamarack 11," Bogus Basin 8," N. Idaho ski areas 6"-8" and Sun Valley 3." A few more inches will fall on Friday as skies begin to clear off for the weekend, and then it's all sunshine with a High Pressure system moving in and temps will zoom into the 40s to 50s by Monday. Enjoy!

Short Term Forecast

Stoke level was high on Thursday at Brundage, Tam and Bogus with plenty of freshies to bring on big grins and fun times in the fresh *pow*! (photo courtesy Brundage Mountain Resort).

Schweitzer cashed in with 8" of new over the last 48 hours, Silver has gotten 6" and Lookout 6" with the Wed PM/Thursday storm cycle. The storm steered to the north of Pomerelle, but Pebble got 4" in the last 24 hours and Sun Valley 3."

Light snow is forecast on Friday and then the High moves in, skies will clear off statewide by Saturday and high temps go a bit higher each day. Back to Spring Skiing mode!

A Low Pressure system moving to our south will provide some instability south of the Snake River this weekend, and Pomerelle is expected to get socked with 8"-12" of new on Sunday! Pebble will get 5" of new Sunday on the last day of the season for the Pocatello ski area.

Extended Forecast

The ridge of High Pressure will rule Idaho and the West looking ahead to the first part of next week, with progressively warmer temps each afternoon through Wednesday, April 3.

Then we'll have a new warmish storm system advance next Wed PM/Thursday with rain and wintry mix to begin with and then a major cool-down will occur and all snow by Thursday-Friday. It's too early to see that much definition on snow quantities, but it appears the weather pattern will be unstable moving into next weekend.

NEW: Snow Ratio Forecast

You can now get a good idea of the upcoming snow quality for the next storm via our new "Snow Ratio" forecast for any location in OpenSnow.

When we talk about snow quality, such as “light and fluffy” or “heavy and wet”, we are talking about the snow-to-liquid ratio. The higher the snow-to-liquid ratio, the lighter the snow quality, and vice-versa.

  1. Go to any location screen and tap the "Snow Summary" tab.
  2. Scroll down to the 5-day hourly or 10-day forecast section.
  3. View the 5-day hourly or daily "Snow Ratio" forecast for the next 10 days.

10:1 will be fun but will feel a little heavy. 15:1 will offer some faceshots and feel pretty light. 20:1 will be incredibly light, almost like skiing through nothing but air.

This new feature is currently available with the latest version of the OpenSnow iOS app installed (App Store > OpenSnow > Update) or on the OpenSnow website (OpenSnow.com). It will be available in the OpenSnow Android app soon.
