We Get A Quick Break

Summary

A beautiful and sunny weekend is in store for us. It will be breezy throughout the weekend over the summit, but plenty of sun shine should make for some great spring skiing. Sunday night into Monday a weak system drops into the region bringing out light snowfall. It could continue into Tuesday with snow showers. The rest of next week is trending warmer and drier...

Short Term Forecast

Friday through Sunday Sun

It's been a little while that I could say we'll see sunny skies for several days straight. Here we are though... on the even of April and we are going to get a sunny weekend. At this point the chances for snowfall are all but none for us through Sunday mid-day. A welcome relief to many I'm sure.

Temps will be rising from the low 30's on Friday to the mid 30's by Saturday and Sunday. Not a cloud in the sky today on Friday with more clouds rolling through Saturday and Sunday. Winds are gusty this morning out of the West Southwest up to 45 MPH. They should subside later in the day. Saturday though winds do look to be gusty up to 50 MPH out of the West Southwest. Sunday they will be even stronger and up to 70 MPH, so you can expect lift closures on Sunday.

Sunday Evening through Tuesday Snow Chances

The weak storm is looking even a bit weaker this morning. The snow might not even start falling until after midnight on Sunday night into Monday morning. The cold air that I was talking about yesterday is still very much a key player for this system. It will be in the teens on Monday and Tuesday at Main Lodge. This will yield fairly high snow to water ratios even if we don't see a lot of moisture.

The winds for this system will be gusty on Sunday, but they should subside into the 30 - 40 MPH range on Monday & Tuesday.

Since the models have trended a little less with precip I'm going to scale back my snowfall forecast. The main snowfall will be overnight Sunday into Monday. Monday afternoon we could see more snow showers and that's the case for Tuesday as well, but I'm not expecting too much out of these showers unless we get enough moisture to go along with the all the cold air. It's possible we could see an orographic surprise.

My updated snowfall forecast through Tuesday now is 4 - 6 inches for Main Lodge and up to 8 inches over the summit. I'll update this as we continue to get closer, since I feel like the models may continue to adjust the timing and track of this system.

Extended Forecast

The models are struggling with the seasonal transition. The Euro and GFS have been at odds as to whether we'd see another system later next week in the Thursday through Saturday 6 - 8th of April timeframe. At this time they are both backing off of any idea of a significant system. The Euro has trended towards the GFS and shows a very weak system now capable of another inch or 2.

We'll have to keep watching this. It does appear as though we're heading into a much drier pattern for the middle of April. The details of this pattern still need to get worked out but it's possible we won't see any real snow for more than week coming up after this next Sunday through Tuesday system.

I'll keep you posted on those details as we get closer.

Till the next one... Mike out.
