Wet Conditions For The Early Weekend

Summary

Rain will start falling in New England late Friday night, and into Saturday. Sunday will see a dramatic increase in winds, with the potential for snowfall at some locations.

Short Term Forecast

Good morning everyone, we are looking at partly cloudy skies across New England this Friday morning. Temperatures are in the lower 20s, and winds are 5-20 mph in the higher elevations. This is truly the “Calm before the storm” as the region gets ready for another round of rain late this evening. Read below for the details. Here is a look at Loon if you’re planning on heading out today:

A strong system from the south will bring a round of rain to New England Friday night and into Saturday. Here are the specifics:

Where/When: This storm will move from the southeast to the northeast. Rain will start in CT late Friday afternoon, and engulf the entire region by late Friday night.

Precipitation Type: The higher elevations will see a mix of snow and sleet at the start of this storm. Unfortunately though, this system is associated with warm air from the south. Temperatures will rise above freezing on the slopes, and rain will fall through the night.

Precipitation will peak Saturday morning. Heading into the afternoon hours, the rain will start to taper off and become showery. Most of the damage on the slopes will already be done though. Expect wet and slushy conditions on the slopes for Saturday. Not ideal for one of the most popular days to ski. Here is a look at the storm track:

The storm will move northeast and depart the region entirely by early Sunday morning. Some wrap-around showers will bring a small amount of snowfall to the northern resorts. The main story for Sunday isn’t the snow though, but the winds. Winds will turn northwesterly and drastically increase in intensity. Wind speeds are expected to increase to 25-40 mph with gusts up to 50 mph at times. Wind delays are a high probability. Keep this in mind if you’re heading out!

Extended Forecast

Looking ahead to next week, the best chance for snow appears to be Tuesday. A Nor’easter is tracking to drive up the New England coastline and deliver a round of snow. The position of this storm will determine snowfall accumulations. The exact position is just too difficult to resolve this far out. We’ll have a better idea of where that storm will set up, and subsequently which resorts will receive the most snow as we get closer. Keep it on your radar!

Not much to talk about after Tuesday's storm right now. Quiet weather will return to New England for the following few days. As always though, make sure to check back here for any updates on storms mentioned in both the long and short term.

Thanks for reading! Stay dry on the slopes.
