Wednesday brings another fine day for South Island ski fields with light north to northwest winds and increasing high cloud over the Southern Lakes by afternoon. A front will move through early Thursday, bringing rain and high snow, followed by light snow showers in the Southern Lakes that evening. Gusty northwesterlies may disrupt operations in Canterbury. Friday remains partly cloudy with strong winds, and snow showers developing over the Queenstown area and later in Canterbury as winds shift southwest.
Weekend Forecast, 21st & 22nd June
Snowfall clears early Saturday as southerly winds ease, leading to a calm, mostly sunny day across South Island ski fields. On Sunday, strengthening northwest winds precede a front that brings rain and high-level snow to the Southern Lakes during the day, with the system reaching Canterbury after closing.
Extended Forecast
A succession of fronts is expected to move in from the west between Tuesday and Friday next week, delivering heavy rain and strong northwesterlies. A colder southwest shift late in the week may bring snow. Conditions could become quite rough before high pressure builds, setting the stage for a calmer weekend.
