Powder For Southern Lakes Too As Storm Shifts South
Summary
NZ ski fields were hit by rain and wind, but cooler air is bringing snow. Canterbury gets wet snow Friday (20–40 cm up high), with rain lower down. Southern Lakes will see 20–30 cm to low levels by Saturday night. Sunday to Monday looks good for skiing.
Short Term Forecast
Forecast for Friday 27th & Saturday 28th June
Canterbury will start Friday wet, with rain turning to soggy snow through the morning as cooler southeasterlies move in, though snow may not reach base level at all ski fields. Conditions will ease north of Mt Hutt overnight, while snow continues in the Mackenzie Basin. Higher slopes are the best bet, though visibility will be poor due to cloud.
In the Southern Lakes, Friday will also be cloudy and damp, with easterlies pushing low cloud against the slopes. Light flurries are possible during the day, with heavier snow arriving overnight.
Snowfall will ease across the Southern Lakes and Mackenzie Basin during Saturday, clearing by night as winds swing southwest. In Canterbury, it’ll stay mostly cloudy, with snow showers creeping north in the second half of the day.
Forecast for Sunday 29th to Tuesday 2nd July
Skies clear across the South Island before lifts open on Sunday, with sunshine returning and winds shifting from southwest to northwest. A weak front may bring a light snow top-up to the Southern Lakes overnight.
Monday brings a mix of sun and cloud, along with westerly winds. Tuesday stays calm and settled, continuing the pleasant conditions.
Extended Forecast
Wednesday looks calm and stable with a high-pressure system moving across the country. From Thursday, another low from the Tasman is set to move through later in the week. Initial forecasts hinted at solid snowfall, but current outlooks suggest light rain is more probable. We'll hold off on any firm predictions until Monday’s update.
Thanks for reading. The next forecast will be out early Monday.
