Series of Strong Storms Starts This Weekend

Summary

Several resorts saw their first snow of the season over the last week, and a real snowstorm is on track for Sunday through Wednesday. The Andes will look and feel quite different by the time this storm winds down later next week.

Short Term Forecast

After the first snowfall for many resorts in South America last week, a more significant, long-duration storm is expected this weekend through much of next week. Copious moisture combined with below-normal temperatures will set the stage for a significant early-season storm.

A series of storms from the south/southwest will move through the region this weekend and have already brought some snow to the region. In the GIF below you can see the series of storms moving through South America from Sunday, April 28th through Tuesday, May 7th. While confidence is lower on the storms next weekend and beyond, additional significant snow is possible during that time. Below is an early look at potential snow totals through next week.

Most of the snow will fall as a result of two main storms, the first from today, Sunday, through Wednesday, and another starting next weekend. Each has the potential to drop significant snow totals of a meter or more, especially in the central region.

Extended Forecast

There are some signs the pattern could remain active in the long range as well, with additional snow in the second week of May. We'll have to keep an eye on this and hope that this early-season snow can stick around and be followed up by additional storms.

Thanks for reading the South America Daily Snow!

I'll have another update later this week.
