South America Daily Snow

Storm #1 Winding Down, Storm #2 Getting Started
Summary
Solid snow totals in the central zone so far, especially at Nevados de Chillan, as the first storm in this winds down early this morning. The next storm will bring snow back from south to north in the afternoon kicking off another period of accumulation snowfall. We'll see more snow through the weekend and into next week although the final storm in this series is looking a bit weaker.
Short Term Forecast
Nevados de Chillan was the winner as of yesterday morning, with 25 cm of snow overnight. Other resorts in the central zone saw around 5 - 15 cm while just a few cm were reported in the northern zone as of Thursday morning. Resorts are beginning to shut down for the season, with Antillanca closing on September 9th. Below is the latest list of closing dates.
Nevados de Chillan: September 22
Portillo: September 22
Las Lenas: September 30
Cerro Bayo: September 30
Cerro Catedral: September 30
La Parva: October 8
Chapelco: October 13
Valle Nevado: October 20
Corralco: November TBA

We could see a short break in the morning before the next storm moves in. Snow will return from south to north and become heavier overnight. This storm will persist through Sunday morning before the third system approaches. Storm #3 is looking a bit faster now, likely wrapping up on Monday. Storm #4 is looking a bit weaker and disorganized so while additional snow is expected early next week, accumulations look to be on the lighter side.
Below are the expected totals for storm #2 from Friday through Sunday. The central zone will see big totals from this one and some strong winds as well, especially in the southern half. Nevados de Chillan should be far enough north to stay out of the worst winds. The Chilean side of the central zone is still looking at 30 - 60 cm + with 20 - 40 cm on the Argentiniean side. Caviahue could come in closer to the 40 - 60 cm range.
Storm #2 will wrap up early Sunday, but once again the next storm will already be on the doorstep. Before this system arrives, however, the models are picking up on a potential smaller wave farther north as storm #2 moves out. This should bring a period of heavy snow in the northern zone from Saturday night through Monday. We may see some low-level winds out of the east which would bring the heaviest snow to Las Lenas.
This has the potential to bring 25 - 50 cm at Las Lenas during this time, and if the easterly winds stick around a bit longer than the models are showing, totals approaching 70 cm are possible. Temps are cool and winds are mellow so Sunday and Monday could really turn out to be good powder days. The snowfall from this wave, as well as the rest of storm #3 is captured in the snow forecast below. Overall, the southern part of the central zone should do best. Expect another 25 - 50 cm in the southern part of the central zone, with totals dropping off to the north.
You can see the latest snow forecast from the European model below.
Extended Forecast
We should see a break later next week but the models show more action starting up toward the end of the month. With several resorts remaining open more powder days are possible.
Next update on Monday.
