Big Spring Storm Cycle Continues
Summary
Impressive snow totals over the weekend at many resorts in the Andes have brought powder turns back for at least a little bit longer. Chances for snow continue through Wednesday before we dry out for a couple of days. A smaller storm is possible later this week followed by another over the weekend.
Short Term Forecast
The latest storm brought big totals over the weekend, and big wind as well. Below are some of the latest amounts as of Sunday afternoon.
Cerro Catedral: 80 cm (mid-mountain)
Chapelco: 60 - 70 cm (upper-mountain)
Corralco: 60 cm (mid-mountain)
Nevados de Chillan: 55 cm (mid-mountain)
Las Lenas: 30 - 60 cm (mid-upper mountain)
As expected, the winds were cranking over the weekend, Corralco remained closed both Saturday and Sunday, while upper mountain terrain was limited across the region.
This storm has shifted to the north with the heaviest snow falling in the northern zone on Monday. Lesser accumulations are expected in the central zone as this storm winds down later today. Snow totals from this morning through the evening are shown below.
The final storm in this cycle arrives Monday night and will bring another period of moderate to heavy snow to the Andes. This will be a faster moving storm so overall snow totals won't be too impressive. The central zone should see another 10 - 20 cm with snow tapering off Tuesday night.
Wednesday through midday Friday will be dry as a ridge briefly sets up over the region, but another small storm will move in later on Friday. This storm will be warmer, and will bring mostly light to moderate rain and snow through Sunday. We could see snow levels climbing above mid mountain at most resorts.
Another storm will be fast approaching and will keep the action going on Sunday. This system looks like it start warm but finish with cooler temperatures and snow levels falling back below base elevations.
Extended Forecast
More storms are possible during the first week of October, and with several resorts still open, more powder days are possible. It's too early to discuss specifics, but I wouldn't put the gear away after this weekend.
Next update on Wednesday.
