Almost Done...

Summary

Snow continues today (Friday) with lighter snow showers lingering into Saturday morning. Highs only in the 20's on the mountains and 30's at lake level through Saturday. High wind gusts this morning to 70 mph on the mountain tops should slowly come down into Saturday. We could see another 7-19 inches on the mountains by Saturday morning, and 7-13 inches at lake level. We have some sun Sunday into Tuesday morning. Highs in the 30's on the mountains and 40's at lake level. We may see some light rain/snow showers by Tuesday evening. Wednesday through Thursday night we have another storm on the way. This is storm could start with snow levels around 8,000 feet Wednesday, falling to lake level Thursday. Above 8,000 feet we could see another 1-3 feet of snow, and several inches below that depending on the snow levels. We may finally go into a drier pattern the week of the 26th.

Short Term Forecast

The storm produced last night.  I had a high end forecast of 21 inches along the crest for Thursday-Thursday night.  Reports from the mountains this morning are 15-28 inches, so we came in over forecast on a few mountains.  That keeps us on track with the forecast of 3-5+ feet as we have 3-4.5+ feet so far and another 24 hours of snowfall ahead.

reports

We still have heavy snowfall streaming into the Tahoe basin this morning.  We should continue to see snow all day with another 5-14 inches possible on the mountains.

radar

As the low moves through tonight lighter snow showers should continue with another 2-5 inches possible on the mountains.  We should finally clear out Saturday afternoon after some light scattered snow showers.  Here is a look at the total precip forecast from early this morning through Saturday.

Here is the updated forecast for additional snowfall through Saturday morning.

snowfall forecast

Sunday into Tuesday we are expecting a break in the action with some sun and slightly warmer temperatures.  Should be nice at lake level with highs into the 40's.

There is another storm lined up to move in Tuesday night lasting through Thursday night next week. Low pressure pulling up warmer subtropical moisture for Wednesday with snow levels around 8,000 feet.  Then a cold trough pushing in from the North for Thursday keeps the snowfall going but drops snow levels below lake level.  This storm could drop 1-3 feet above 8,000 feet as an early guestimate.  Below 8k the forecast will be trickier with the snow levels starting high and falling.

You can see how wet the GFS is by next Friday.

We can worry about tracking this storm after we tally up the current storm this weekend.

Extended Forecast

We may see one last wave drop into the trough the weekend of the 24th before it is replaced by a ridge the week of the 26th.  The GFS ensemble mean runs have come in line with the European model, with them both showing a ridge over the West Coast the week of the 26th bringing an end to the train of storms.

We will have to watch the pattern going into April to see if we will have an "Awesome April" after what I think will officially go down as a "Miracle March" after we finish with all these storms.

Stay tuned...BA
