Weekly Update 10/18....

Summary:

We saw some rain and high elevation snows over the weekend.  This week high pressure will build in keeping us dry for at least a week, but temperatures will be cooler.  Forecast models continue to struggle in the long-range, but do show some storms towards the end of the month.

Details:

The low to the South brought us some scattered showers as expected Thursday and Friday, and the front that moved through over the weekend held together enough to bring some more rain and high elevation snows.  Snow levels stayed mostly above 9500 feet around the Tahoe basin.  We saw a dusting Saturday on the highest peaks that quickly melted.  Further South towards Mammoth they saw a little more snow above 9000 feet as seen on the web cams this morning.

Last week the forecast models were showing the possibility of more storms later this week.  They are doing what they were doing last season in showing storms 10 days out and then as we get within 5 days showing the ridge holding strong off the coast and keeping storms to our North.  That will happen again this week.  Temperatures will be cooler though with highs in the 50's and 60's.

Long-Range:

Beyond 10 days storms are still showing up towards the end of the month.  We will have to see of the high pressure ridge does break down or shift West allowing in some storms, or continues to sit off the coast and keep storms to our North.  As we get later into the Fall and the jet stream strengthens it will also shift further South and we should have a better chance of seeing a storm or two going into November.  Until then we can just keep watching....

El Nino:

Not much change over the past week with just slight strengthening.  The affects are expected to be seen in CA during the heart of Winter.  Still a little nervous about forecasts like this one showing the trough and gulf of Alaska low further West in the Pacific than they were during the last 2 strong events.
