Another big storm will hit the western US this week

Summary

Here we go again. After a week where the central states (California, Utah, Colorado) saw a strong storm with up to 100 inches in Tahoe (California), another storm will take aim on about the same region during the upcoming week. The next storm will be a warmer and might come through in multiple pieces – details below.

Short Term Forecast

The beginning of this season started very dry for California, Utah, and Colorado, but we are making a comeback now in March as we are getting about one slow-moving storm each week.

Last week (March 11-18), a storm brought up to 100 inches of snow to the Lake Tahoe area in California, with 1-3 feet in Utah, and 1-2 feet in Colorado (the snow in Colorado will continue through Monday, March 19).

During the upcoming week, another slow-moving storm will bring multiple rounds of snow to the western US and Canada, with the deepest totals possible over parts of California.

The caveat to the storm that will bring snow later this week is that the moisture will be accompanied by warm air, so snow levels will likely be high until closer to the weekend when the cooler air finally moves in.

Thankfully, the snow will not end when the cooler air arrives this weekend - powder is in the forecast!

If you are thinking about chasing powder this week and weekend, keep your eye on the snow levels and perhaps aim to chase later during the storm as this is when we’ll see the coldest air. Also, stay tuned to the Chase Daily Snow (http://opensnow.com/dailysnow/chase) to get Powderchaser Steve’s take on where to find the deepest snow.

Extended Forecast

The storm over the western US will be in no hurry to leave. It could bring cold air and snow to the Rockies through the middle of next week (March 25-28) before finally exiting to the east.

If you’re still jonesin’ for powder, these late-season storms will help you to satiate your desires for pow. Get after it!
