Snow heading to the Northwest and Southeast

Summary

Following many powder days across the central western US and the northeast, the atmosphere will switch things up and snow will head toward the northwestern US and western Canada, as well as the southeastern US (yes, seriously!).

Short Term Forecast

Powder!

Steamboat has seen snow on 10 of 14 days since the resort opened on Thanksgiving, and the most recent powder day on Tuesday, December 4th was the best yet with a super soft base and 12 inches of their famous Champagne Powder™ on top.

Many other areas have enjoyed deep powder days, including California, Wyoming, Utah, and Colorado. These states are about to see drier weather as the atmosphere shifts the storm track to the northwest and southeast.

Forecast for Thursday & Friday

This week will end with a weak system cruising through the southwest, bringing snow to Arizona, southern Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico, and there will also be lingering cold air and snow showers over the northeast.

Forecast for the weekend

The weekend is when the atmosphere will switch things up. One storm will head to the southeast where mountains in North Carolina and Virginia should receive more than 12 inches of snow from late Saturday night through Monday morning.

And in the Pacific Northwest, you can see the first hints of a more active storm track that will hopefully be the start of snowfall that lasts for the entire upcoming week.

Forecast for next week

During the second full week of December, there are two areas of the US and Canada that will be favored for snow.

The first area is the southeast, where the storm from the weekend may linger into Monday, and another storm may head that way later in the week.

The other area is the Pacific Northwest, which should see a steady stream of storms all week. This is great timing as the Northwest’s snowpack is well below average and they need a series of storms to get back on track for the season.

Extended Forecast

Taking a peek at the longer-range outlook from December 15-19, the map hints at storms continuing to impact the Northwest, the potential for some systems to track over the southwest, and a continued chance for snow over the eastern seaboard.

Thanks for reading and look for the next forecast on Monday, December 10.
