Heads up, there may be fresher snow! Read the latest US and Canada Daily Snow

Light snow this week, stormier next week

Summary

Mountains are still enjoying the multiple feet of snow that fell during the past week. Looking ahead, this week’s weather will offer less snow, then next week is when stronger storms should return across the west.

Short Term Forecast

December started deep!

From California to Utah to Colorado, there was deep powder during the last few days of November and into early December. For example, Snowbird in Utah measured 35 inches during four days!

Forecast for this week (December 3-7)

This doesn’t look like a big week for snowfall. The northeast will be chilly (following some rain on Sunday night) while California through the central and southern Rockies will receive a few inches of snow.

Even though the forecast doesn’t look deep, the significant and consistent snow over the past few weeks means that many mountains are offering lots of open terrain and snow conditions are pretty darn good, especially considering that it’s only early December!

Forecast for the weekend (December 8-9)

Again, there are no big storms in the forecast for most mountain areas across Canada and the United States.

There will likely be snow across the southeast or mid-Atlantic, which will make headlines because these southern areas are not used to seeing much snow each season.

Also, if you look at the Northwest, snow is just creeping back into the forecast. This is a harbinger of what is to come next week.

Forecast for early next week (December 10-11)

While we cannot trust the details of snow forecasts that are 7+ days away, most models are showing lots of snow returning to western Canada and the western United States starting early next week and continuing through most of the week.

This means that following a week with few or no storms, we’ll hop back on the pow train early next week.

Extended Forecast

The longer-range outlook for December 12-16 shows that warmer air could push over the eastern 2/3rds of North America while stormy weather settles over the west, and especially the southwest.

Thanks for reading and look for the next forecast on Thursday, December 6.
