Best chances for New Years powder

Summary

The southwest will see snow through the end of this week, then it looks like the northwest and the Rockies will have the best chance for powder around New Years. After that, the west should see drier weather for the start of January while the east cools off.

Short Term Forecast

Forecast for the rest of this week

The end of Christmas week should bring the most powder to southern Colorado and New Mexico. While other areas around the US and Canada will see snow, but the deepest accumulations could be here in the southwest.

Forecast for the weekend

The storm that will bring powder to the southwest on Thursday should push rain into the northeast on Friday into Saturday. Behind this warmer eastern storm, snow showers should return to the northern and western mountains for most of Saturday and Sunday.

In the west, the next significant storm will likely hit British Columbia and Alberta, Canada on Saturday (December 29th) and will then bring snow to Washington, Idaho, and Wyoming on Sunday.

Forecast for next week

If you are searching for powder for New Years, it looks like your best bets will be northwestern British Columbia, parts of Colorado and New Mexico, and perhaps northern New England.

The forecast for all of next week shows this snowfall around New Years and also the potential for snow in the mid-Atlantic later in the week.

Another weather story for early next week will be the cold air over the western United States, which could drop temperatures 20 degrees below average with readings well below 0F.

Extended Forecast

Forecast into early 2019

Most models show that the first 5-10 days of 2019 will be on the drier side for much of the western United States. To find snow, we might have to head north to northern British Columbia or head east to see if an east-coast storm can take a favorable track for snow in the mountains.

Thanks for reading and look for the next forecast on Monday, December 31.
