Record-breaking February

What an incredible month!

The deepest month-long totals belong to California where resorts are reporting 250-325 inches during February’s 28 days.

Also during February, Jackson reported 202+ inches and recorded new snow on 22 of 27 days (likely 23 of 28 days but I am writing this article before the report is posted for Feb 28). Wow!

Forecast for Thursday to Friday (Feb 28 – Mar 1)

Snow will continue across the west during the final two days of the week. The snow in California should be winding down on Thursday with maybe a break on Friday, while the powder will continue in Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. Further south, Utah and Colorado will get back into the action with powder on Friday.

Forecast for The Weekend (Mar 2 – Mar 3)

The forecast for Saturday and Sunday brings a stripe of snow west-to-east across the entire United States. California should have a powder day on Saturday, and Utah and Colorado will likely enjoy powder on both Saturday and Sunday. The northeast may see snow on Sunday, with a potentially stronger storm on Sunday night into Monday.

Forecast for Next Week (Mar 4 – Mar 8)

The 5-10 day snow forecast for next week shouldn’t be taken as an absolute since exact snow forecast amounts at this lead time are not reliable. The general look to the forecast is a good one, though, with a storm over the northeast to start the week and a series of storms over the west during the middle and end of the week.

The Outlook for March 9 – 13

The big message for the ten-to-fifteen-day outlook is that the west has a good chance of staying cool and stormy as we head into mid-March. Nearly every mountain region of the west has a snowpack that is near or above average, and we should continue to pile on the powder for the next few weeks.
