Quiet for now, storms return late next week

Summary

A powerful storm will leave deep powder in Colorado and New Mexico on Thursday, then we’ll see calm weather for about one week before storms return to the west starting around March 19-21.

Short Term Forecast

Forecast for Thursday 3/14

Southern Colorado was pummeled with snow earlier in the week with 30-50 inches, and then a near record-strong storm formed over eastern Colorado on Wednesday and this delivered an additional 10-30 inches to Colorado and New Mexico on Wednesday and Wednesday night.

For Thursday, we’ll see the softest snow in Colorado and New Mexico thanks to the snow that fell on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, plus we’ll see some fresh snow that fell on Wednesday Night. The forecast for Thursday shows just lighter amounts over and surrounding Colorado as the powerful storm tracks to the northeast.

Forecast for Friday 3/15

We haven’t seen a weather map like this for many weeks. Most of the country will NOT be seeing snow, and unfortunately, the northeast will see warm temperatures and rain for most of the day.

Forecast for Saturday 3/16 – Sunday 3/17

The calm weather over North America will continue through the weekend. The northeast should see cooler air return in the wake of Friday’s rain and there could be a few inches of new snow over the weekend. The northwest could also see light snow, mostly in the northern part of British Columbia.

Extended Forecast

The Outlook for Monday 3/18 – Friday 3/22

The week will start calm for much of the continent. Later in the week, we could see the action pick up with a storm over the east, snow returning to the northwest, and maybe a few systems tracking over the southwest or central western United States.

Looking far ahead, the longest range models show a stormier pattern returning to the western United States during the final week of March, which means there will likely be more powder days in our future!

Thanks for reading and look for the next forecast on Monday, March 18.
