Multiple storms for the Northwest and the Rockies

Summary

Snow will fall in the northwest and parts of the Rockies for the better part of one week, with totals of 1-2+ feet. Then at the end of October, storms will track toward the east coast, though some snow may also hang around the northern Rockies.

Short Term Forecast

Snow on the Ground

Comparing the current snow depth across the United States and southern Canada to what we saw at this time last year is a fun way to gain perspective.

This year on October 16, 2019.

Last year on October 16, 2018.

October snow depth does not correlate with snowfall for the rest of the season, so do not read anything into the relative lack of snow over Utah and Colorado, or the greater totals in southern Canada.

Forecast for Thu, Oct 17 – Fri, Oct 18

The first of many storms will bring snow on Thursday and Friday to British Columbia, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado. Amounts in Canada will be deep (12+ inches) though amounts in the United States will be lighter.

Also, the higher mountains of the northeast will see a burst of snow thanks to a rapidly strengthening late-week storm.

Forecast for Sat, Oct 19 – Mon, Oct 21

The strongest storm in the series will bring snow to the Northwest and the Northern Rockies during the weekend and into early next week. Snow amounts will likely hit or exceed 12 inches for most of the Northern Rockies and western Canada.

Forecast for Tue, Oct 22 – Fri, Oct 25

As the entire storm track begins to shift to the east, a final wave (or waves) of energy will bring light snow accumulations to the Northwest and the Northern Rockies later next week

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Sat, Oct 26 – Wed, Oct 30

All major longer-range weather forecast models agree that the coldest air and best chance for stormy weather will push toward the eastern half of the United States and southern Canada during the final five days of October.

This pattern should allow resorts in the northeast to ramp up early-season snowmaking. If this weather pattern hangs back just a bit to the west, it’s possible that Alberta, Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado could get brushed by cold air and light snow.

Thanks so much for reading, and stay tuned for the next update on Monday, October 21st.
