Faceshots in the Rockies, and a shift in the storm track

Summary

October brought well-above-average snow to most of the Rockies. Looking ahead through early November, the atmosphere is going to make a change with the best chance for snow heading to western Canada, Montana, the upper Midwest, and the northeast.

Short Term Forecast

Faceshots!

October 2019 will be remembered by skiers and riders in the Rockies as over four feet of snow fell on many mountains. During the past few weeks, we’ve posted pictures of powder skiing from Alberta, Canada to Colorado, and now, here is a screengrab (full video) from a deep powder session at Alta, Utah on Tuesday, October 29th.

Forecast for Thu, Oct 31 – Sun, Nov 3

While the first half of this week brought significant snow to the Rockies, especially around Utah and Colorado, the storm track will shift for the second part of the week with the best chance for snow will be in British Columbia and Alberta, Canada, as well as the Upper Midwest. The northeast could see rain on Friday and then cooler temperatures during the weekend.

Aside from the snow, cold temperatures from the Rockies through the Upper Midwest and the northeast should allow snowmaking to continue, which is a large part of what we’re looking for during the early season.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Mon, Nov 4 – Fri, Nov 8

All weather forecast models are in agreement that the best chance for colder-than-average temperatures will be near and east of the Rockies and over the Upper Midwest and the northeast.

This means that during the first full week of November, the storm track should bring the most snow to western Canada, parts of Montana, and also to the higher elevations of the northeast.

The weather pattern that I show above looks like it will be locked in through about November 11th. After that, it’s possible that things could shift again with more action for the western United States.

Thanks so much for reading, and check back for my next post on Monday, November 4th.
