Significant western storms through the week

Summary

The deepest powder this week will be in the western United States. Storms will bring 1-3+ feet of snow to California, Oregon, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico.

Short Term Forecast

Alaska

The early-season snow in Alaska has been superb. While most operations limit their calendar to the spring, Silverton Mountain Guides Alaska Heli gets out there in the fall as well. Darn, does this look good or what?!

Forecast for Mon, Nov 25 – Tue, Nov 26

We’ll start the week with three systems on the weather map. On Monday morning, a storm will be departing New England. Also on Monday, a storm will bring 5-10+ inches of snow to Utah and Colorado, and that system should wind down on Tuesday. And along the west coast, a storm will bring snow to Oregon on Monday and Tuesday then will shift south during the middle of the week.

Forecast for Wed, Nov 27 – Fri, Nov 29

The map below is great for those of us who want powder and is not looking good for folks planning to travel for Thanksgiving across the central and southern mountains.

A multi-day storm will bring 1-3 feet of snow from California to Colorado and at most mountains in between. Multiple powder days are in our future, albeit with limited in-bounds terrain.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Sat, Nov 30 – Wed, Dec 4

I will continue to be somewhat vague about the snow potential during the first five days of December. All models show that much of the United States will see cool temperatures. The challenge is figuring out the exact storm track. I do think that there will be storms during this weekend and next week, but their exact location is elusive.

Let’s hope that the atmosphere is in a giving mood and pushes plenty of moisture into the United States to go along with the cold air that will likely be in place during early December.

Thanks so much for reading, and check back for my next post on Wednesday, November 27th.
