Stormy in the west for the next two weeks

Summary

All forecast models continue to show back-to-back-to-back storms for the northwestern United States and Canada through the third week of January. It should be a powder paradise for many mountains.

Short Term Forecast

Powder Comparison

My favorite forecast view on OpenSnow is the 10-day graph view. Anyone can switch between a summary, table, and graphical comparison view of the 5-day forecast and All-Access subscribers can see out to 10 days. This is a snapshot of the comparison page for Washington State. Bring on the snow!

Forecast for Mon, Jan 6 – Tue, Jan 7

We will start the week with deep snow in British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana. The storm track from the northwest continues to favor these regions.

Forecast for Wed, Jan 8 – Fri, Jan 10

The northwest will continue to see the deepest snow, and some storm energy will head south and bring light-to-moderate snow amounts to the central and southern Rockies, including California, Utah, Wyoming, Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado.

Forecast for Sat, Jan 11 – Sun, Jan 12

The map above for the end of the week, and the map below for the weekend, look reasonably similar. That's because the storm track will generally stay locked in with the best snow over the western United States and Canada.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Mon, Jan 13 – Fri, Jan 17

There is no change to the outlook through the middle of January. All models agree that the coldest and snowiest weather will stay over the west while the east gets warm. The best chance for cooler weather in the east will be extreme northern New England.

Thanks so much for reading and please check back for my next post on Thursday, January 9th.
