Thanksgiving Week Outlook

Summary

Thanksgiving Week (for the U.S.) is upon us, which also coincides with opening week for a number of ski resorts across North America. The pattern this week will continue to favor the Northwest and the Northeast, though CO & NM will see some midweek snow as well. Northern New England could see its heaviest snow of the early season late this week.

Short Term Forecast

Active northern storm track continues

The Northwest and Northeast will be the most favored regions for snowfall this week with below-average temperatures expected across the East and above-average temperatures across the West.

The deepest snow totals this week will occur over the higher elevations of British Columbia while the WA Cascades will see rain issues later in the week. New York and Northern New England will see a good storm late this week with significant snow totals possible.

Forecast for Mon 11/22 – Tue 11/23

A storm will move across the Pacific Northwest on Monday and Tuesday with a nice round of snow for Washington, Oregon, Idaho, BC, and Alberta. A storm will bring mostly rain to the East early on Monday, but backside snow showers can be expected in New England and New York behind a cold front later Monday and into Tuesday.

Forecast for Wed 11/24 – Thu 11/25

The Northern Rockies will see a quick round of snow on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, while a separate weak storm will also move across the Southern Rockies around this time with Southern Colorado and Northern New Mexico picking up a round of snow.

The next storm will impact the Northwest on Thursday but warmer air arriving will result in mostly rain for Washington, while higher elevations of British Columbia will see heavy snow. The East will stay generally dry during the daytime hours on Thanksgiving Day with the next storm likely holding off until after sunset on Thursday.

The Upper Midwest will see some lake effect Thanksgiving snow showers, especially around the UP of Michigan.

Forecast for Fri 11/26 – Sat 11/27

A stronger storm will move across the East on Thursday night and Friday with rain/mixed precip quickly changing to snow. On the backside of the system, northwest flow snow showers will continue across New York and New England through Saturday with impressive amounts adding up for some areas.

Western Canada will continue to see periods of mid to high elevation snow on Friday and Saturday with warm air resulting in rain for lower elevation areas.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Sun 11/28 – Thu 12/2

A cold and active northwest flow will continue over New York and New England during the early portion of this period with additional snow showers expected. The West will remain in a warmer pattern, but the storm track will start to dip southward by late in the period with cooler temperatures and increasing snow potential for the Cascades while BC will continue to get hit with frequent storms as well.

Thanks so much for reading! Next update on Wednesday (11/24).
