Pattern favors New England over Thanksgiving Weekend

Summary

Northern New England will be the favored ski region over the coming days as a storm impacts the area on Friday & Saturday with moderate to heavy snow totals expected. A generally cold and active pattern will continue across Eastern North America through the end of November with additional snow chances. The West will see milder temps with heavy snow for higher elevation areas in Western Canada.

Short Term Forecast

Snowy Thanksgiving weekend forecast for New England and Upstate New York

A storm will impact New England and New York over the holiday weekend with rain turning to snow on Thursday night and Friday morning as a cold front arrives. Snow totals will add up nicely across the Adirondacks, Green Mountains, and White Mountains on Friday and Saturday with cold temperatures and additional light snow showers to follow on Sunday and Monday.

Here is a 5-day snowfall projection from one of the weather models we use through the holiday weekend...

Forecast for Wed 11/24 – Thu 11/25

Two departing storms over the Rockies will result in lingering snow from Montana to Northern New Mexico through the morning hours on Wednesday before tapering off later in the day. The next storm will reach the Northwest on Thursday with heavy snow for British Columbia, while Washington resorts will see a transition from snow to rain as warmer air arrives.

Forecast for Fri 11/26 – Sat 11/27

The Northeast will see a nice storm on Friday and Saturday with rain changing to snow on Friday morning and snow continuing through Saturday with the deepest totals over Northern New England. Light snow from a departing storm will dip into the Northern U.S. Rockies on Friday & Friday night.

The next storm will reach the Northwest on Saturday with heavy snow for the higher elevations of BC, but warmer air will result in rising snow levels with snow mixing with or changing to rain for some areas in Southern BC.

Forecast for Sun 11/28 – Mon 11/29

One to two "clipper" storms arriving from the northwest are projected to impact the Midwest and East in the Saturday night through Monday timeframe. Upper Midwest and Mid-Atlantic ski resorts will be best positioned to pick up new snow in this pattern, while Northern New England could see additional light snow showers.

A storm will continue to impact British Columbia on Sunday with a change-over to rain likely for many ski resorts, while upper mountains of high elevation resorts will continue to see heavy/wet snow.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Tue 11/30 – Sat 12/4

The Northwest and Northeast will continue to be the most favored regions heading into early December. Mild temperatures in the Northwest will eventually give way to a cooling trend and better snow chances (as opposed to rain) for ski resorts. Cooler than average temperatures will prevail across the Northeast.

Thanks so much for reading and (for our U.S. readers) Happy Thanksgiving! Next update on Friday (11/26).
