Big storm possible for the East on Sunday-Monday

Summary

The pattern is turning more active across the East with cold temperatures and light snow chances Wednesday-Saturday, followed by a strong storm that could potentially bring heavy snow from the Southern Appalachians to New England on Sunday-Monday. A quiet pattern will continue across the Western U.S. over the next week while Western Canada & Alaska will continue to pick up snow.

Short Term Forecast

Big storm possible for the East, but still 5-6 days away

Ski season has gotten off to a slow start across the East this winter, but that may be about to change as medium-range weather models are honing on a storm that could impact a large portion of the Eastern U.S. on Sunday & Monday.

This storm has the potential to produce moderate to heavy snow across New England, the Mid-Atlantic, and the Southeast, but we are still far enough out that confidence in amounts & favored areas is low and subject to fluctuations in the storm track.

Be sure to check the New England Daily Snow & Mid-Atlantic Daily Snow for updates as the storm approaches.

Forecast for Wed 1/12 – Thu 1/13:

Heavy snow and (for some areas) lower mountain rain will fall across British Columbia on Wednesday. A weak cold front will move across the Northwest on Thursday with light snow and lower mountain rain showers developing. A series of weak disturbances will also bring light to moderate snow showers to the Upper Midwest & East, with locally heavy lake effect snow possible for favored areas.

Forecast for Fri 1/14 – Sat 1/15:

A weak storm will bring a little bit of light snow to the Rockies on Friday, favoring areas near & east of the Continental Divide. A strong storm will bring heavy snow to Alaska and Northern BC on Friday night & Saturday. The East will continue to see light snow showers at times, more so on Friday than Saturday.

Forecast for Sun 1/16 – Mon 1/17:

A storm will impact the East during this period, with the Southern Appalachians & Mid-Atlantic favored on Sunday and New England on Monday. Stay tuned as there is still plenty of uncertainty and the snowfall projection pictured below will change as we get closer. Out West, another storm will bring moderate to heavy snow to parts of BC with mostly dry conditions south of the border.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Tue 1/18 – Sat 1/22:

The storm track will continue to favor the East during this period with additional snow chances and below-average temperatures. Across the West, the storm track will be most favorable for the British Columbia Interior, Canadian Rockies, and perhaps the Northern U.S. Rockies with drier conditions elsewhere.

Thanks so much for reading! Next update on Friday (1/14).
