Here we go again in California
Summary
March is not holding back this year as we will remain in an active pattern from coast to coast for the foreseeable future with mid-winter-like cold in many areas. The Sierra Nevada Range will be the most favored area once again with deep snow totals this weekend and early next week. The PNW and Rockies will also see regular snow showers & New England will score a big storm with heavy snow Fri-Sat.
Short Term Forecast
Abundant snow from coast to coast with another huge cycle for Tahoe
What a winter it has been for Tahoe! The Central Sierra Snow Lab is experiencing its deepest winter to date since 1952, and there is no end in sight to the snowy pattern either. Another huge storm cycle will impact the Sierra this weekend with snowfall being measured in feet once again.
Many other areas will stay in an active pattern as well with daily rounds of snow for the Cascades and the Rockies through the middle of next week. New England will also see one of its bigger storms of the season on Friday-Saturday as winter is finally showing some signs of life in the East.
Forecast for Fri, Mar 3 – Sat, Mar 4:
A strong storm will impact the Lower Great Lakes and Northeast during this period with deep snow totals expected across Upstate New York and New England. Sleet could mix in across southern portions of these zones, and the Mid-Atlantic from PA southward will see more rain than snow.
An area of low pressure will set up just off of the West Coast during this period with moderate to heavy snow showers favoring the Cascades while the Sierra will get in on the action by later in the day on Saturday. Snow showers can also be expected across the Rockies from BC to Colorado.
Forecast for Sun, Mar 5 – Mon, Mar 6:
An area of low pressure will remain off of the West Coast on Sunday with significant moisture streaming into California with very heavy snow expected across the Sierra. Lighter and more intermittent snow showers can be expected elsewhere across the West from the PNW to the Rockies.
A storm will also impact the Midwest on Monday with snow favoring the Upper Great Lakes region.
Forecast for Tue, Mar 7 – Wed, Mar 8:
The West Coast low pressure system will gradually weaken during this period but lingering moisture will continue to result in snow showers from the Northern Sierra to the Cascades and possibly the BC Coast Range.
The Rockies will see light snow showers as well, while there is at least some potential for upslope snow on the eastern slopes of the Colorado Rockies though confidence is low at this time.
Another storm will impact the Northeast during this period with more snow for New York and New England.
Extended Forecast
Outlook for Thu, Mar 9 – Mon, Mar 13:
This period is looking snowy for nearly all major ski regions of North America. Frequent storms will continue to make landfall in the West while a cold and active pattern is also likely across the East with snow chances extending southward into the Mid-Atlantic.
Thanks so much for reading! Next update on Monday (March 6).
