Active pattern from coast to coast
Summary
The West has been getting slammed with storms recently and cold temperatures have ensured good-quality snow across the board and low snow levels across the maritime ranges. Storms will continue to favor the West heading into mid-March, but the East is also getting into an active pattern with colder temperatures. A strong storm will bring heavy snow to parts of New England late this week.
Short Term Forecast
Deep pattern continues for the West:
The pattern has been relentless across the West recently! Storms have been pummeling California with heavy snow since late last week and Utah and Wyoming have also been scoring the goods as moisture has moved inland. A cold airmass in place has contributed to deep, low-density powder accumulations from the Wasatch to the Tetons while Colorado and other parts of the Rockies have joined the action as well.
Check out the scene from Jackson Hole during one of its multiple powder days earlier this week:
Forecast for Wed, Mar 1 – Thu, Mar 2:
Heavy snow will taper off across California on Wednesday mornings as the focus shifts into the Southern Rockies with Arizona, Southern Utah, and Southwest Colorado scoring the deepest totals. A storm will also impact BC on Wednesday-Wednesday night before reaching the Cascades and Inland Northwest on Thursday.
Two storm swill move across the Midwest and New York/New England during this period with moderate accumulations adding up in some areas.
Forecast for Fri, Mar 3 – Sat, Mar 4:
A strong storm will impact the East during this period with heavy snow developing across the Lower Great Lakes, New York, and New England. However, ice and/or rain could potentially mix in across parts of New York and Southern New England.
The West will remain in an unsettled pattern as well with snow showers expected across the BC Coast Range, Cascades, and Rockies on Friday. The Cascades will see heavier snow develop on Saturday as the next storm arrives with Northern California getting in on the action by late in the day.
Forecast for Sun, Mar 5 – Mon, Mar 6:
A deep pattern will resume across Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada Range during this period as multiple storms make landfall in California. Moisture will also reach portions of the Rockies and the Pacific Northwest with additional periods of snow expected.
Snow from Saturday's storm will linger across New England on Sunday before drying out on Monday. A storm will also bring a round of snow to the Midwest on Monday.
Extended Forecast
Outlook for Tue, Mar 7 – Sat, Mar 11:
The storm track will continue to favor California and the Sierra Nevada Range for the heaviest and most frequent rounds of snow during this period. The rest of the West should stay active as well but with relatively lighter and more intermittent snow compared to the Sierra. Temperatures will continue to run colder than average across most of the West.
An active pattern is likely to continue across the East as well and temperatures will also be colder than average in both the Mid-Atlantic and New England, providing some hope for a late-season boost in snow conditions.
Thanks so much for reading! Next update on Friday (Mar 3).
