Happy New Year!

Summary

The last few weeks of 2023 were not very snowy for most areas of North America, but with a new year comes new hope. A more active pattern is expected to take hold during the first 1-2 weeks of January across both the West and the East with improving snow potential.

Short Term Forecast

Snow for the Lower 48 and Canada This Week:

Snow chances are going to ramp up across Western and Eastern North America during the first week of the New Year. The pattern transition will be gradual during the first half of this week with colder temperatures and light snow chances for most areas.

By the end of the week and into the weekend of January 6-7, stronger storms will be possible with the potential for significant snowfall in the Northwest in particular, while temperatures will also stay cold with low snow levels.

Forecast for Mon (Jan 1) to Tue (Jan 2):

A weak storm will bring snow to Western British Columbia, while terrain-driven snow showers will continue across the Mid-Atlantic with the potential for moderate accumulations in West Virginia.

Forecast for Wed (Jan 3) to Thu (Jan 4):

Two storms will reach the West during this period, with one storm tracking across the Sierra into the Southwest, while a second storm will bring snow to Northern BC and Alaska. A storm will also move into the East with snow showers developing across the Mid-Atlantic and Northern/Western New England.

Forecast for Fri (Jan 5) to Sat (Jan 6):

The pattern looks more active during this period with multiple storms likely from coast to coast, though the precise storm tracks and associated impacts are still uncertain and subject to change. A storm will linger over parts of the Southwest early in this period, while a stronger storm is likely for the Northwest with the potential for significant snowfall.

A storm will also move into the Southern Appalachians and Mid-Atlantic on Saturday, and depending on the storm track, all precipitation types are possible from snow to ice to rain.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Sun (Jan 7) to Thu (Jan 11):

This week is looking active with the potential for multiple storms across the West along with below-average temperatures. Storms are generally expected to move from northwest to southeast from the Pacific Northwest into the Rockies.

An active storm track is also expected across the East with the potential for snow in the Mid-Atlantic and New England, but a warming trend is also expected which could lead to rain or mixed precipitation at times.

Thanks so much for reading and Happy New Year! Next update on Wednesday (Jan 3).
