Winter Still Won't Let Go
Summary
As a major storm winds down in the Northeast, heavy snow continues in the West. Several more days of snow with very cold air are expected in western Canada and the western US, with widespread solid accumulations. More spring-like weather is expected later next week into the weekend.
Short Term Forecast
Recent Snowfall:
Over the last few days, an impressive spring snowstorm has delivered big totals across the northeastern US. Here are some of the deepest 2-day snow totals as of Thursday AM (April 4):
- Jay Peak: 12"
- Magic: 10"
- Bromley: 10"
- Killington: 9"
- Stratton: 8"
- Sugarbush: 8"
- Ragged: 7"
- Mad River Glen: 6"
- Sugarloaf: 6"
Five-Day Snow Forecast:
Now that the big storm is winding down in the East, the attention shifts to the western US and Canada, where Winter continues to win the battle against Spring. The storm in the West has delivered heavy snow across the central and southern Sierra, Oregon, Alberta, and Idaho. As this storm moves inland and stalls, significant additional accumulations are expected. The deepest snow will likely fall on the eastern side of the central Rockies, in Montana and Wyoming. Eastern Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico will also see solid snow totals.
Forecast for Fri (Apr 5) to Sat (Apr 6):
As the storm in the Northeast departs the region, a few lingering snow showers will be possible in northern New England. Southeastern Quebec, especially the eastern part of the Gaspe Peninsula, will see moderate to heavy snow through Saturday.
An upper-level low will slowly move across the western US on Friday, bringing snow to most of the region, heaviest in southeastern Montana and eastern Wyoming. Idaho, Utah, and Colorado will also have the opportunity for powder days.
Forecast for Sun (Apr 7) to Mon (Apr 8):
The slow-moving storm in the West will bring additional snow through Monday, heaviest still in southeastern Montana and eastern Wyoming. Decent totals are expected in Colorado and New Mexico as well. Another storm will move into the Northwest during this time, bringing more snow to British Columbia.
Forecast for Tue (Apr 9) to Wed (Apr 10):
Additional snow is expected in New Mexico, as the next storm moves through the western US and into the four corners. Snow showers will linger in interior British Columbia and Alberta as well. The central and eastern parts of the US and Canada will be mainly snow-free during this time.
Extended Forecast
Forecast for Thu (Apr 11) to Sat (Apr 13):
Most of southern Canada and the US will see above-normal temperatures later next week through the weekend. Ridging will build in over both the East and West bringing spring-like conditions during this time. The only cold air in sight is up in Alaska.
Thanks so much for reading! Next update on Monday (April 8).
