Indian Summer

Summary

After an active start to October, quiet weather takes control with warm temps likely for later this week and beyond.

Short Term Forecast

The first 10 days of October were quite exciting as an active, winter-like pattern brought us plenty of low elevation rain and eventually high elevation snow.  Many mountain locations in the state picked up totals of 2 feet or more total from these storms.  I got my first turns of the season with a short tour in BCC, sticking to slopes that I knew to be just grass underneath.  No point getting injured now!

Calmer weather is starting to take control, although there will be a weak disturbances passing to our east tonight.  The main impact of this will be too cool us down tonight.  Sunday could be quite cool with valley temps in the 40s and mountain temps maxing in the high 20s and 30s.

After Sunday, we got really quiet for the foreseeable future.  High pressure will take control and we should see temps return to above normal values.  The current suite of Euro ensembles showing almost no chance of appreciable precip:

Aside from a few disturbances just to our east, and some sub-tropical moisture to our south in Arizona, there's really not much going on in the western US over the next 10 days.

Extended Forecast

From what I can see right now, it looks like there's a chance the high pressure could continue right on thru the end of October.  I think the majority of the snow will melt on south and west facing slopes, but northerly aspects could retain a rotten layer of snow. Not an ideal scenario for backcountry stability.

Next update will be when I see signs of change...
