Sunday Snow

Summary

Clouds will be on the increase today ahead of a system that arrives early Sunday morning. Snow thru the day on Sunday into Sunday night before clearing on Monday. Mostly dry next week.

Short Term Forecast

Not too much change to the theme of the forecast. Timing of the storm is still the same. It should start snowing after midnight up near the Idaho border and by sunrise down in the Central Wasatch (Cottonwoods/PC). However, there is not quite as much moisture in latest model runs as there was in previous days. We've seen a gradual downward trend in total snowfall. Yesterday I showed both the 12km NAM graphs and SREF plumes. Here is today's NAM for the Upper Cottonwoods:

Yesterday this was showing slightly over a foot and now it's at 10". That's not a huge difference, but it is a bit less snow. The SREF numbers are more noticeably lower. Yesterday it was showing a mean of 1.5" of liquid, today it is at about 1".

What does that mean for snowfall amounts? It means that I'm now expecting less than I was yesterday. I'm going to say a general 6-12" of snow for the high elevations. There are some favored locations like the Cottonwoods that could still easily better these numbers, but I have no idea if the trend of lower totals will continue today. So I think forecasting conservatively is a smart idea.

Remember, it's President's Day weekend. Sunday will be busy, Monday could be the busiest day of the year. Keep that in mind when planning your ski days this weekend.

Extended Forecast

We should be mostly dry next week with high pressure pushing inland. Right now, models have come into agreement on a solution that drops a trough into the region around Monday the 24th. This could bring a threat for snow back to the area. Otherwise, we are in a mostly dry pattern until then.
