Weak Storm Clears, Quiet for now

Summary

We had a weak storm push thru last night and drop up to a few inches of snow. We are much cooler today and will gradually warm thru the week with clear conditions. Pattern could become more active as we head into March.

Short Term Forecast

Believe it or not, we had a storm move thru last night. If you blinked, you missed it. In most of our cases, we were asleep and missed it. However, the mountains of Northern Utah saw a bit of snow. Anywhere from a trace to 4" of snow fell overnight. We are already clearing out, but we can't rule out some additional light snow showers today. Temperatures have also plummeted from yesterday. On-mountain temps today are in the single digits and teens -- a bid difference from the 30s we had yesterday.

We should be mostly quiet all week with gradually warming temps as we head toward the weekend.

High pressure is in control along the west coast, keeping the storm door closed thru the end of the month.

The image above is height anomalies on February 27th. You can see the ridge clearly along the coast and western states.

Extended Forecast

Things do start to change late in the upcoming weekend. On Sunday into Monday, models are hinting at a system that could bring mountain snow. At this point, it's too early for details, but it does look like the overall pattern is going to shift back in our favor a bit. Here are the same heights for March 3rd:

You can see the ridge has been pushed off the coast with a deep trough central North America. Then, if we advance farther to about March 9th...

The trough retrogrades west and we could see more southern branch of the jet getting involved. This could mean more zonal pattern and good news for California we desperately need water. General idea for Utah is we would get more active as well. Something we just have to watch...
