High Pressure in Control

Summary

We are under a ridge of high pressure that will keep us mostly dry this week. We will be brushed by a system late Wednesday into Thursday and again on Saturday. We could have a chance for light snow in far northern Utah. Otherwise, we wait for a pattern change that looks to take place for the last 10 day of January.

Short Term Forecast

A ridge of high pressure is in control now. Utah is warming aloft but we are seeing cool temps in the valleys with strengthening inversions. We should remain mostly dry in Utah over the next 5 days. Here is our OpenSnow map of accumulations in the US over the next 5 days:

The PNW remains the target of the best snowfall. Utah is just a little bit too far south to get in on the action. However, models do show us being clipped by a system late Wednesday into early Thursday. This could bring light snow and minor accumulation to the far northern mountains. Thursday could feature a light refresh. Then, after a break thru Friday, another system could clip us on Saturday and also has a chance to bring light snowfall to far northern Utah. Here are these two waves represented by GEFS members:

It's not much, with a mean between the two of them of only 0.4" and even that might be overdone, but it's something.

Extended Forecast

The big question is when will we have a chance for bigger, true winter storms? This season has featured so many weak systems and we have yet to have a true winter storm that drops big snow on all resorts. Well, at this point I don't see any big storms. However, the models are at least opening the door. Here are the forecasted ensemble mean heights for January 21:

We are now within the 10-day window for this pattern change and we are starting to see signs in the operational models. The ensemble mean precip is inching upward. This suggest the chances of us seeing meaningful precip later this month is improving. It's going to be a long process over the next 10 days watching how this evolves -- but it does appear as if the door will at least open to more substantial storms. *fingers crossed*
