Cold and Snowy

Summary

Snow showers continue today (Saturday) with a bit of clearing by this afternoon. Another system drops into the region tonight with snow continuing on Sunday and spreading south through the day. Cold temperatures likely throughout. We will see a drier pattern for the upcoming week with gradual warming.

Short Term Forecast

The season that keeps on giving has given once again! Our relatively weak storm has done alright and we are seeing some decent storm totals. 17" at Brighton with 12" at Solitude and Alta. 11" at Park City and Snowbird. 10" at Beaver Mountain and Cherry Peak. 9" at Deer Valley. 8" at Snowbasin and PowMow. Lesser amounts elsewhere.

Looking good in LCC today although the canyon is closed until at least 8:30am:

DV is also looking fresh:

It's going to be a good day! Snow showers will continue this morning and gradually taper off through the day with perhaps some peeks of sun. Another 1-4" likely today with the highest amounts in orographically favored areas like LCC.

It won't be long until our next storm arrives later tonight. We will see a broad, but mostly light band of snow develop over northern Utah. As the center of the system drops to our west, this draped area of light snow will pivot on its axis. You can see this in the forecast radar tool here on OpenSnow:

Not a huge system by any means, but it's going to bring the entire state another round of snow with the north seeing snow tonight through Sunday and southern Utah seeing snow arrive during the day Sunday as the band in the above animation sags south. It will also bring more very cold air which will enhance totals with high snow-to-liquid ratios. Here is the total liquid precip forecasted for the state:

Not exactly big totals, but you can see some pockets of >0.5" of liquid. The HRRR graph from U of U for upper LCC shows the following liquid:

About 0.45"... I think if we assume something close to 20:1 ratios, we could easily see 6-12" of fluff from this storm. If we get another storm that exceeds our expectations, totals could be even higher. Like I said, not a huge storm, but another opportunity to be pleasantly surprised and it's falling on an already soft base. Sunday and Monday should ski well, in addition to today obviously.

Extended Forecast

We should clear out by late Monday with cold weather for much of the upcoming week. High pressure is taking control so we should see drying and warming through the week. Our next chance for a storm looks to be sometime around February 6th, but models are all over the place with how the pattern evolves and what this could look like. Who knows? We will watch and see. In general, the pattern does look to get more favorable from Feb 5 to about Feb 10.

I recently re-tweeted what I thought was a great, positive message from one of our beloved UTA bus drivers here in the Cottonwood Canyons. These bus drivers are doing their best in a rough situation:

It then came to my attention that this same bus driver and his wife are going through a series of unfortunate events that have led to some financial hardship. If you're able and want to help support a valuable member of our Wasatch community, consider making a donation to his GoFundMe! Our community is what we make of it and any help we can provide is appreciated.
