Significant storm Wednesday and Thursday

Summary

A weak storm on Monday night delivered 2 inches of snow, and a stronger storm will bring more substantial accumulations from Wednesday to Thursday.

Update

Monday

Monday was dry, warm, and partly cloudy. On Monday night, a weak storm tracked across Colorado, and we did pretty well with about 2 inches falling at mid-mountain.

Tuesday

Tuesday will be dry, partly cloudy, and warm-ish with a high temperature in the low 30s. The morning scene shows clouds parting with some areas of clearer skies, and we'll enjoy the 2 inches of fresh snow when lifts open.

Wednesday

The mid-week storm will be getting organized on Tuesday night and Wednesday, so I have low confidence in the snow forecast. A reasonable estimate is that we'll see a few inches of snow on Tuesday night and/or Wednesday morning. Wednesday's high temperature will be in the 20s.

On Wednesday afternoon and Wednesday night, the storm will get its act together and should produce intense snow. I think we'll see 8-12 inches of snow from Wednesday night through Thursday morning. The storm will bring a wind from the east, and while this does not always produce a lot of snow at Winter Park, in this case, the wind from the east will extend from the ground all the way to 30,000 feet, so most of the lower atmosphere will be pushing against the mountains and will be forced to rise, and this should create substantial snow at Winter Park.

Thursday

On Thursday morning, we should see powder from the snow that fell on Wednesday evening, and we should get another 3-6+ inches of snow through Thursday midday before the snow wanes later in the afternoon. The high temperature will be in the teens.

Friday to Wednesday

On Thursday night and Friday, the steady snow should end but we could still see some snow showers.

Then from Friday, March 15 to Wednesday, March 20, I expect mostly dry weather and partly sunny skies, with just a low chance for more clouds and a few snow showers. Daily high temperatures will be in the upper 20s to low 30s.

Longer Range

All of the longer-range forecasts point toward snow returning, starting around Thursday, March 21, and continuing through the end of March. It's far too soon to figure out the details of the upcoming snowfall, but at least it's good to see that the data is pointing toward more snow before the end of the month.

My next update will be Wednesday morning.
