Rain on Friday turns to Snow this Weekend

Summary

Moisture from the Coral Sea will bring light rain to NSW on Wednesday, creating slushy conditions. Thursday will be clear, but Friday's front will bring rain and strong NW winds to the Australian Alps. However, a cold change this weekend will add 5-15cm of snow, helping to restore conditions.

Short Term Forecast

Wednesday & Thursday (14th & 15th August)

In New South Wales, light rain will fade by morning, leading to clearer skies and sunshine in the afternoon on Wednesday. Victoria will experience a bright and sunny day. NW winds will diminish by morning. Thursday will also be a sunny day with some high clouds and gentle winds.

Friday & the Weekend (16th to 18th August)

Friday will have rain spreading across Victoria in the morning to reach New South Wales by the afternoon, with NW winds growing strong and gusty. Thunderstorms may occur at some resorts. As colder air moves in during the night, rain will turn to snow at higher elevations.

Snowfall at higher levels will drop to around 1500-1600m in the early morning on Saturday, but will gradually rise a bit during the day before clearing at night as W-NW winds shift to SW. However, rain is expected to continue on Mt Baw Baw overnight.

A switch to colder southerly winds on Sunday could bring some additional snow and create conditions suitable for snowmaking.

Extended Forecast

At the beginning of next week, high pressure is expected to create calm and clear weather on Monday. However, by Tuesday and Wednesday, strong northwest winds may bring rain showers and high-altitude snow as a low-pressure system moves beneath the Australian Alps.

Thanks for reading. I'll continue to provide these forecasts every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday throughout the southern hemisphere season.
