Snowpack Diminishing Amid Rough Weather, But Some Snow Wednesday & Thursday
Summary
The weather has been harsh over the past week, with heavy rain and strong winds on Sunday significantly impacting the snowpack. Strong winds will continue this week, disrupting lift operations and further eroding the snowpack. However, cooler air on Wednesday may bring snow down to around 1500m, with 5-15cm expected at higher elevations and a few centimeters at lower levels on Wednesday and Thursd
Short Term Forecast
Monday & Tuesday (26th & 27th August)
Overcast and drizzly conditions on Monday may brighten somewhat in the afternoon as strong westerly winds ease and shift to the northwest. Light snowfall is expected on mid-to-upper slopes during the morning.
Northwesterly winds will intensify to gale force on Tuesday, possibly severe in certain areas, likely disrupting lift operations. Victorian resorts will remain misty and drizzly, with some improvement later in the day. Partly cloudy skies are expected in New South Wales.
Wednesday & Thrusday (28th & 29th August)
Expect severe northwesterly gales to make mountain conditions very challenging on Wednesday, so be prepared for harsh weather. Showers will start early, turning to snow at elevations above 1700m in Victoria and 1900m in New South Wales in the morning, dropping to 1500-1600m by nightfall.
Showers will persist throughout the day on Thursday, initially bringing snow down to around 1500m. As the gale-force westerlies shift to northwest and weaken slightly, snow levels will rise to 1800m or higher by morning.
Extended Forecast
Northwesterly winds will remain strong through Friday, the weekend, and into Monday, as several fronts move across the Aussie Alps. These fronts will bring snowfall at higher elevations, with snow levels occasionally dropping to mid-slopes after each front passes. The lower slopes are expected to take a significant hit during this period.
Thanks for reading. I'll continue to provide these forecasts every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday throughout the southern hemisphere season.
