Arctic Pow Time

Summary

An arctic cold front has started to slow down as it approaches the region and this has resulted in heavy snow along with gusty west winds and slowly dropping temperatures. 9 inches of windblown cold smoke has fallen overnight, and close to a foot in the last 24-hours. Winter Storm Warnings remain in effect through 5pm today for continued snow with another 3 to 5 inches.

Update

Today:

At 7:00AM it’s 19 degrees in the Village and 12 degrees at the 8800’ level of Andesite Mountain. 11 inches of new snow fell in the last 24 hours. Currently the skies are cloudy with snow falling (and blowing) over Lone and Andesite mountains. At Andesite Mountain at 8800’ winds are currently blowing out of the West at 11 mph with gusts to 27 mph.

Today expect snow in varying intensities throughout the day with an additional 3 to 5 inches likely through last chair. Big Sky is just south of a major arctic cold front and this air will be slowly pushing in all day Sunday, so expect the temps to be slowly falling all day along with gusty west winds. High temperatures this afternoon across mid to upper mountain locations (9000’) will range from 7 to 11 degrees. Gusty winds will be blowing from the West at 15 - 20 mph with afternoon gusts to 40 mph up on the ridgetops.

Extended Forecast:

Sunday night, snow showers look to drop another inch or two. Unsettled, extremely cold, and another inch or so of feathery snow are in store for Monday along with moderate West winds. High temperatures Monday up on the mountain at 9000’ will barely reach 7 degrees. Tuesday looks to clear the skies and bring in the sun but with frigid air dominating, with single digit highs. Not exactly great news, but it turns even colder Wednesday thru Friday, with below zero highs likely each day. Even worse, it will be dry and sunny. A chance of snow is possible into next weekend. Be safe, respect others and rip some drifts today!
