Storm System Moves Out leaving 5 inches in its Wake

Summary

Five more inches over the last 24-hours has brough the 72-hour storm total to 2 feet. More good news, the arctic air looks to stay north of Bozeman leaving Big Sky with chilly, but not frigid daytime temps through Wednesday. A couple of minor storm systems Wednesday night and Thursday will bring a few inches along with a cold flow of that frigid arctic air. Thursday’s expected high, 1 above.

Today:  

At 7:00AM it’s 11 degrees in the Village and 5 degrees at the 8800’ level of Andesite Mountain. 5 inches of new snow fell in the last 24 hours with 1 inch overnight. Currently the skies are cloudy with flurries over Lone and Andesite mountains. At Andesite Mountain at 8800’ winds are currently blowing out of the West at 7 mph with gusts to 15 mph.

Today expect off and on flurries through early afternoon with mostly cloudy skies after that. Big Sky is just south of the border of frigid arctic air that is stationary just north of Bozeman. Literally, this is one of the warmest mountain spots in Montana today. High temperatures this afternoon across mid to upper mountain locations (9000’) will range from 10 to 12 degrees. Gusty winds will be blowing from the West at 12 - 18 mph with afternoon gusts to 35 mph up on the ridgetops.

Extended Forecast:

Tuesday looks to clear the skies and bring in the sun along with slightly higher daytime temps with highs of 12-14 degrees at 9000’. Wednesday looks to be a repeat of Tuesday with a high of 12. A couple of shortwave systems will brush the region Wednesday night into Thursday that could bring 2 to 4 inches to the mountain. These systems are also expected to cycle in some of that arctic air Thursday with a high of 1 above (upper-mountain temp). Friday looks to be a cloudy day with flurries and a high of 2 above at 9000’. Unsettled skies look likey for this weekend with continued daily high temps in the single digits.
