Sunny and Cold but not Frigid (yet)

Summary

Arctic air is still holding tight north of Bozeman leaving Big Sky with chilly, but not frigid daytime temps through Wednesday. A couple of weak systems Wednesday night and Thursday will bring a skiff to an inch but also a dose of stone-cold reality that is true arctic air. Thursday’s expected high, 6 below zero. Friday’s 10 below zero. Good news, a chance of 2 to 4 inches Thurs night into Friday.

Update

Today:

At 7:00AM it’s 2 degrees in the Village and 4 degrees at the 8800’ level of Andesite Mountain. No new snow fell in the last 24 hours. Currently the skies are clear over Lone and Andesite mountains. At Andesite Mountain at 8800’ winds are currently blowing out of the NE at 2 mph with a recent gust to 11 mph.

Today expect mostly sunny skies with below seasonal average mountain temperatures. Just a reminder, Big Sky is one of the warmest mountain spots in Montana as it lies just south of the polar vortex that is currently affecting most of the state. High temperatures this afternoon across mid to upper mountain locations (9000’) will range from 9 to 11 degrees. West winds will be blowing at 11 - 18 mph with afternoon gusts to 30 mph up on the ridgetops.

Extended Forecast:

One more day of partly sunny skies with “comfortably cold” daytime temperatures (high of 10 at 9000’) on Wednesday before we get invaded by the arctic cold Thursday.  A couple of weak systems will brush the region Wednesday night into Thursday bringing light snow, but no accumulations are expected. These systems will cycle in the arctic air that’s been lying just north of us on Thursday with a high of 6 below zero (@9000’). Thursday night into Friday another shortwave rolls through bringing light snow and the chance of 2 to 4 inches into “Frigid Friday” along with a high of 10 below zero at 9000’. Saturday, mostly clear and sunny with an upper-mountain high of 6 below zero. Unsettled skies look to return Sunday along with a return to above zero daytime high temps with a high of 7 above.
