Snow and Colder Air on the Way

Summary

Arctic air is still camped out north of Bozeman leaving Big Sky with cold, but not frigid daytime temperatures. Two weak systems, one Thursday night and the other Friday could each bring 2 to 4 inches to the mountain(s) but will also cycle in some modified arctic air. Thursday’s expected high, 4 above zero. Friday’s 5 below zero. The holiday weekend starts cold but quickly warms by Sunday.

Update

Today:

At 7:00AM it’s 2 degrees in the Village and 7 degrees at the 8800’ level of Andesite Mountain. No new snow fell in the last 24 hours. Currently the skies are cloudy over Lone and Andesite mountains. At Andesite Mountain at 8800’ winds are currently blowing out of the West at 9 mph with a recent gust to 25 mph.

Today expect a mix of cloudy skies with numerous sunny breaks with below seasonal average mountain temperatures. Big Sky is one of the warmer mountain locations in Montana as it lies just south of the polar vortex that is currently affecting most of the state. High temperatures this afternoon across mid to upper mountain locations (9000’) will range from 10 to 12 degrees. West winds will be blowing at 10 - 15 mph with gusts to 30 mph up on the ridgetops.

Extended Forecast:

A couple of weak systems will brush the region Wednesday night and Thursday bringing light snow, with a slight chance for a skiff to an inch. These systems will cycle in the arctic air that’s been lying just north of us on Thursday with a high of 4 above zero (@9000’).

Thursday night into Friday another shortwave rolls through bringing light snow and the chance of 2 to 4 inches into Friday morning. Snow looks to continue Friday with an additional 2 to 4 inches through the day along with a high of 5 below zero at 9000’. Saturday, mostly clear and sunny with an upper-mountain high of 2 above zero. Unsettled skies look to return Sunday along with daytime high temps of 7 above. Presidents Birthday Monday, cloudy skies with a tropical high of 14 above. Snow looks likely to return Monday night into Tuesday.
