It’s Getting Cold Outside

Summary

A Wind Chill Advisory is in effect Thursday and Friday for Gallatin County due to arctic air infiltrating the region bringing gusty west winds with dangerous wind chills. A weak system Thursday night could bring light snow with an inch or two possible. Friday will be the coldest day of the snap with highs around 4 below. Look for another inch or two on Saturday with continued frigid temps.

Today:  

At 7:00AM it’s 9 below zero in the Village and 2 (above) degrees at the 8800’ level of Andesite Mountain. No new snow fell in the last 24 hours. Currently the skies are cloudy over Lone and Andesite mountains. At Andesite Mountain at 8800’ winds are currently blowing out of the West at 9 mph with a recent gust to 17 mph.

Today expect cloudy skies with numerous flurries with frigid mountain temperatures. The arctic air that has been sitting in central Montana is slowly moving into the region today. High temperatures this afternoon across mid to upper mountain locations (9000’) will range from 2 above to 2 below zero. West winds will be blowing at 10-15 mph with gusts to 30 mph up on the ridgetops bringing dangerous will chills.

Extended Forecast:

Thursday night into Friday a weak storm system moves through bringing light snow and the chance of 1 to 2 inches into Friday morning. Very light snow looks to continue Friday through the day with a skiff to an inch along with a high of 4 below zero at 9000’. Saturday, light snow returns with another inch or two with an upper-mountain high of 2 below zero. Unsettled skies bring some flurries on Sunday along with daytime high temps of 2 above. Presidents Birthday Monday, cloudy skies with a tropical high of 14 above. Snow looks likely to return Monday night into Tuesday.
