Quiet Through Thursday, Small Storm to End the Week
Summary
Most of Europe, including the Alps and Pyrenees, just experienced some of the warmest December weather on record. That warm air mass has passed, and there’s a small storm to bring some snow towards the end of week. Beyond that, even warmer temperatures may return to end the year.
Short Term Forecast
Over the last few days, while the US was extremely cold, Europe has been extremely warm. On Christmas, it was colder in Miami than in London! Sadly, heavy rain fell at lower and mid elevations across much of the Western Alps, with much of the natural lower elevation snowpack being lost. However, with yesterday’s snow and a few more storms in the forecast, snow will slowly pile up once again.
Forecast for Tuesday 12/27 - Thursday 12/29
Before we can talk about the next storm, we have a few quiet days to get through. Temperatures will cool off a bit for Tuesday, but the warming trend will return on Wednesday, and likely last through the weekend. We could see some more extremely warm air over the region this weekend. War, dry, and calm through the day Wednesday and Thursday.
Forecast for Friday 12/30
Around midnight on Friday, the next round of snow arrives in the western Alps. Temperatures will be warm and climbing for this event, with dense snow. The biggest totals will be in the western Alps, where 5-15 cms are expected in the French and Swiss Alps. Below is the European snow forecast for the event. Snow levels should stay below base elevations for most of the event, though lingering showers on Friday could mix with rain.
Forecast for Saturday 12/31 - Sunday 1/1
We have another short break from storms this weekend, as temperatures skyrocket. We could see temperatures more than 15 degrees above normal, especially on the northern side of the Alps in Switzerland and Austria, with mid mountain temperatures around 5-8C and even warmer below. As you can see below, the most anomalously warm air is from Switzerland east, but it will still be a scorcher all across the region.
You can see the forecast temperatures at 1500m are absurd also.
Extended Forecast
Outlook for Monday 1/2 - Friday 1/6
We will see some cooler air arrive around the 2nd, and temperatures will be more season during that week. A few smaller storms are possible during this period, around the 3rd or the 4th, but right now they look fast moving with no more than 5-10 cms at most. Beyond this time frame, I am not seeing any signs for a big storms, but some continued light snow is possible.
