A Few Rounds of Light Snow with a Bigger Storm Possible Next Week

Summary

We have another mostly quiet week in store, with just a few chances for light snow. Chances are increasing for a heavier snow event toward the end of next week, so let's keep our fingers crossed.

Short Term Forecast

Forecast for Saturday 2/18 - Monday 2/20

Saturday should stay dry before the next round of light snow arrives on Saturday night. Expect light snow, mainly in the Austrian Alps, through midday on Monday, with accumulations in the 5-10 cm ranges.

Forecast for Tuesday 2/21 - Wednesday 2/22

After a dry day on Tuesday, the light snow shifts to the western Alps for Wednesday and Thursday, with just a few cms expected in the French and Swiss Alps.

Forecast for Thursday 2/23 - Saturday 2/25

Later Wednesday night into Thursday morning, a snow will begin in the Pyrenees and continue through Friday night. In the Alps, the snow starts during the day on Thursday, and should continue through Saturday. This is looking like a major snow event for the Torino, Vercelli, Valle d'Aosta, Verbano-Cuseo-Osola, Biella, and Cueno regions of Italy, with 1-1.5 m possible at upper elevations of the higher resorts. Some of the far southern Swiss Alps on the Italy border could see totals in this range also.

Up to .5 m is possible in the rest of the western Italian Alps, and generally 25-50 cms for the rest of the French, Swiss, and Italian amounts, with the highest in the southern flank of the Italian Alps. The western Pyrenees should see 20-40 cms during this time as well.

This is still almost a week out, so some of these details will likely change. At the moment, this looks like a really deep storm for parts of the Italian Alps, and a solid storm for much of the French and Swiss Alps. Below is the latest snow forecast from the European model.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Sunday 2/26 - Thursday 3/2

Another round of heavy snow is possible during this time period, as the original upper level low pressure system lingers east of Spain. Way too early to get into the details on this one, but there is definitely the potential for a strong one-two punch.
