Snow for the Pyrenees/Eastern Alps in the Short Term
Summary
The deepest snow in the next week will be in the Pyrenees, with some big totals possible. A moderate storm is on tap for the northern side of the Austrian Alps as well. Beyond that, a southerly system may bring snow to the western Alps and more snow to the Pyrenees. Read on for details.
Short Term Forecast
The next 7-10 days will be fairly active across southern Europe, with the Alps and Pyrenees seeing several rounds of moderate to heavy snow. Right now, it looks like there will be four waves significant snow, with widespread snow across both the Alps and Pyrenees.
Forecast for Wednesday 2/22 - Friday 2/24
The first storm on tap will focus on the Pyrenees. Snow will start midday on Wednesday, and fall moderately to heavily through Friday morning. The heaviest snow will fall Wednesday night Thursday night. Expect 30-60 cms during this time. This storm will bring in some cold air as well, leading to good quality snow. Winds don't appear to be an issue either. Check out the snowfall forecast from the European model below.
Forecast for Saturday 2/25 - Wed 3/1
While the aforementioned storm lingers over Spain, a secondary storm will drop in from the northwest, focusing on the Swiss and Austrian Alps. Snow should start Friday night/Saturday morning, and continue through Saturday afternoon, before becoming more showery. Snow showers linger in the Austrian and Swiss Alps through Sunday night, with 20-40 cms likely. Check out the snowfall forecast for the Austrian/Swiss Alps from the European model below.
Around that time, the first low pressure system lingering over Spain, and the second low pressure system that came in from the northwest, will combine, strengthen, and deliver more snow to the region this time to the western Alps in France/Italy. This phase of the storm should kick off on Sunday afternoon and continue through midday Wednesday. Expect 30-60 cms, with the higher totals on the Italy side in th higher terrain. Check out the snowfall forecast for the Italian/French Alps from the European model below.
This storm is not through with Europe just yet though. The new storm made up of the two original storms will then head southwest, bringing another round of snow to the Pyrenees from Monday to Wednesday. This time, the eastern side of the Pyrenees will be favored, with the north facing slopes seeing 30-50 cms, with 20-40 cms on the western side. Check out the snowfall forecast for the second round of Pyrenees snow from the European model below.
Extended Forecast
Outlook for Thursday 3/2 - Mon 3/6
After snow winds down in the Pyrenees on Wednesday the first, the next few days look quiet. The models then completely diverge. The European model shows a large upper level low pressure system setting up over Central Europe for many days, while the American model as a massive ridge that would get in the way of any storms moving through the area. We will have to wait and see which model has the right idea on this time period.
