Off and On Snow for Cuneo, Calm and Mostly Dry Elsewhere
Summary
Heavy snow has been falling in the Cuneo region of the Italian Alps, and snow will continue there for the next several days. Elsewhere, things look mainly dry through the end of the week, with the next chance for snow arriving later in the weekend. Long term, the pattern I have been talking about looks less favorable, with a short period of storminess that is mainly focused on the eastern Alps.
Short Term Forecast
Just a quick update of this post.
Forecast for Monday 2/27 - Friday 3/3
Snow will continue in the western Italian Alps for much of next week, producing solid totals over the course of several days. The heaviest snow will fall Tuesday night to Wednesday morning and Wednesday night to Thursday, with light to moderate snow outside of these windows. By Friday, 30-60 cms should pile up in the Cuneo region, with isolated amounts close to 80 cms. Expect lesser totals just north of Cuneo, and minimal amounts elsewhere.
Forecast for Saturday 3/4 - Sunday 3/5
Looks like snow will return to the Alps next weekend, but right now the extent will be limited to the Austrian Alps. This is looking like a 10-20 cm event, heaviest in the eastern Austrian Alps, with some isolated totals approaching 30 cms. The best day for fresh snow will be Sunday.
Extended Forecast
Outlook for Monday 3/6 - Friday 3/10
As I mentioned before, the upper level low pressure system looks like it will set up farther east than expected during this period. Not only will that keep the heaviest snow east of the Alps, but this feature looks to then drift east. This will allow a ridge to set up over Spain, and prevent storms from impacting most of the Alps and Pyrenees. Let's hope this trend doesn't continue.
