Some Signs of Snow Returning to the French/Swiss/Austrian/Italian Alps
Summary
After a few more days of snow in the southwestern Italian Alps, most of Europe will see a break in the action through the end of the weekend. Starting Monday, a bigger storm may arrive bringing heavy snowfall to a large portion of the Alps.
Update
Snow will continue in southwestern Italian Alps, specifically in the Cueno region, heaviest Wednesday afternoon through Thursday. Another 30-50 cms + is possible during that time.
For the rest of the Alps and Pyrenees, things stay quiet through the weekend, with some spotty snow showers during that time.
The attention then shifts to the March 6-9 period. The models are showing a strong upper level area of low pressure developing in western Russia, and then moving southwest towards Europe. This upper level feature with strengthen and send off numerous waves that will move through the Alps, bringing heavy snow. Both the European and American model generally agree on this upper level pattern unfolding. Below is a GIF from the European model of this pattern evolving during the next 10 days.
This the off pattern has the potential to deliver over a meter of snow, as well as deep snow to a large part of the Alps, stretching from France to Austria. Both the north/northwest French/Swiss Alps, and the southern Italian/Austrian Alps, could get hammered with this pattern. Since this storm won't even begin for nearly a week, I will hold off on snow maps. But for powder lovers in Europe, this is a storm to watch. I am really hoping the models stay consistent with this storm.
I will have an update in a couple days.
