Storm #2 Winds Down, Get Ready for Storm #3!
Summary
Two out of the three storm series have moved through the Alps, with plenty of high elevation snow and a mixed bag at low elevations. The third storm kicks off early next week and will deliver round of deep snow to the Alps.
Update
The first two rounds of snow have played out as expected, with impressive high elevation snow totals and some undesirable clear stuff falling down low, especially in the French Alps. It looks like the Austrian Alps may have fared the best, with the snow levels remaining a bit lower. Even though the moisture was not quite as heavy, the western Austrian Alps received solid snow at most elevations.
Check out some pictures of the snow across the region from the last few days, across France, Italy, and Austria:
Forecast for Monday 3/13 - Wed 3/15
The third storm in this series will start out with high snow levels, as temperatures skyrocket Monday morning. This warmth will be short lived though, as a strong cold front arrives immediately on its heels. Enough moisture will be available behind the front for some good quality snow on top of the heavy layer, as temperatures continue to fall through Wednesday morning. The worst of the warmth will reach the southern French Alps, with less impacts farther north and east, with lower snow levels.
Snow should redevelop Monday night before midnight, becoming heavy overnight in the French and Swiss Alps, and eventually the western Austrian Alps as well. Overnight totals will be deep, setting Tuesday up as a great powder day across the western and central Alps. Snow decreases from west to east early Tuesday morning, but another wave will cause the snow to become heavy once again midday through the afternoon. Light/moderate snow will then continue through Wednesday night, especially in the Swiss Alps, and then through Thursday morning in the Austrian Alps.
Including the continued light snow through Thursday, expect snow totals in the 30-60 cm range, deepest in the higher elevations along the France/Switzerland border, and at resorts like Alps d'Huez, Chamonix, Hauteluce, Les Saisies, Val Thorens, Corvatsch and Les Diablerets. Below is the snow forecast from the European model.
Forecast for Thursday 3/15 - Friday 3/16
Any lingering showers taper off Thursday morning in the Austrian Alps, followed by some clearing on Thursday and Friday, as temperatures climb above normal once again.
Forecast for Saturday 3/17 - Monday 3/19
Another storm is possible next weekend, with potentially a more southern track, that would favor the southern French Alps, with little snow elsewhere. The models don't quite agree on their track, or the storm in general, so I won't even get into totals at this time.
