The Calm after the Storm

Summary

Overall, the last three storms performed pretty well for the Alps, with some much needed snow, especially at upper elevations. Some light snow will continue to fall in the central and eastern Alps, followed by what looks like another break without any measurable snow.

Short Term Forecast

Lingering snow from the last of the three storms will continue through Wednesday morning, especially in the Swiss and Austrian Alps. Snow showers may even persist through Wednesday night in the eastern Austrian Alps, with modest additional totals.

Forecast for Thursday 3/16 - Saturday 3/18

Things should dry out by Thursday morning, and stay calm and stable for the next few days. Temperatures will warm up nicely and settle a bit above normal for these three days. We'll see some clearing on Thursday, especially in the French Alps, before clouds increase again Friday and Saturday. Still, there should be some sun across the Alps those days as well.

Forecast for Sunday 3/19 - Friday 3/24

Towards the end of the weekend, another active pattern looks to arrive in southern Europe. At first, the storms look fast and weak, with likely just some light snow on Sunday and maybe Tuesday. Around Wednesday, a stronger storm approaches the Alps. However, right now, the models have this storm taking a southerly track to the west of the Alps. This isn't a great storm track for the Alps, or the Pyrenees either, but could result in a moderate snowfall for either range, or both. Check out the storm track below.

You can see the weaker storm move through followed by the stronger storm taking a southerly track below the Alps. We will need a bit more time to determine exactly how this storm will impact the Alps and Pyrenees.

Extended Forecast

I am starting to sound like a broke record, but the pattern beyond the this week of March is still unclear. The good news is that I don't see any anomalously strong ridges setting up, so at least we have some hope that the pattern will stay active during that time. Some of the models do indicate that this will happen, but without model agreement, I don't have too much confidence at this time.
