Showers This Week, Bigger Storms Possible Next Week
Summary
While showers will be possible as early as today, Thursday, the models keep pushing a more significant storm farther back. A stronger system is possible Sunday to Monday, but a major storm is not likely until at least the middle of next week. The pattern remains active through the second week of January as well.
Short Term Forecast
A few patterns have been emerging with the models over the last week. Initially, strong storms with a southerly track through the Alps appear in the mid-range. As we get within three to five days of these potential storms, the models start to bring them farther north and also have them weaker overall.
Once again, the models have backed off on the strength and southerly progression of the potential storm on Monday and Tuesday. While this scenario is not totally out of the question, most models keep yet another storm far enough north to result in a major storm.
Instead, we look to the next storm in this series, in the Tuesday to Wednesday timeframe, for something more significant. Still, these less substantial storms will bring snow to the northern and especially the western Alps of France.
Below is a summary of the latest model guidance:
- Showers Thursday through Saturday
- Moderate storm Sunday through Monday
- Stronger storm possible Tuesday through Thursday
Check out the upper-level pattern from Sunday December 31st through Saturday January 6th. You can see the active storm track north of the Alps with storms track further south later in the period.
The snow forecast for the Sunday to Monday storm hasn't changed much, as you can see from the latest European model run below.
Extended Forecast
The models have another storm arriving around the end of next week as well, keeping the active weather going. Still no signs of a ridge before the second week of January.
