The Storm Rolls On
Summary
Heavy snow has blanketed the southern French, eastern Italian, and southern Austrian Alps over the last few days, and now the focus has shifted back to the northern side. On Monday the snow becomes more showery in nature and should last through Wednesday. The Pyrenees may see another round of accumulating snow but the Alps should get a break in the action through mid-month.
Short Term Forecast
The latest storm continues to bring accumulating snow across the Alps and Pyrenees, with up to 40 cms reported in the eastern Italian Alps. The snow for the remainder of the storm will mainly be showery in nature, with modest accumulations. Snow will wind down in the eastern Alps by Tuesday morning and by late Wednesday in the western Alps. Below is the remaining snowfall expected from this storm.
I am still watching the potential for the remnants of this storm to restrengthen over Spain and bring moderate to heavy snow in the Pyrenees and far southern French/Italian Alps. This would occur from Wednesday morning to Thursday. If the track is a bit farther south the impacts will be minor, but below is a potential snow forecast should the latest track hold.
Thursday night through early the following week (Jan 11- 15) should finally provide a break from storms, as a ridge sets up off the Scandinavian coast. The ridge will start to break down over the weekend though, and a strong upper-level trough will develop over northern Europe. This feature will stick around for several days and allow storms to drop down into the Alps.
Extended Forecast
We will be watching to see how far that upper-level area of low-pressure sinks to see if we can get any strong storms into the Alps between the 15th and 20th. Right now the models don't show anything major but that's still a ways out.
