Two Storms On Tap This Week
Summary
Two storms will bring snow back to the Alps and Pyrenees this week. These storms will blanket a large majority of the Alps with snow, with the second storm delivering some big totals. After the second storm wraps up early next week, we should see a break for a few days with additional rounds of snow possible later in the week.
Short Term Forecast
The forecast for this week and the next two storms remains on track. A small storm will continue to bring decent totals to the upper elevations in western Europe on Thursday morning before a stronger storm favoring the southern Alps arrives on Friday. Powder is back on the menu in the Alps and Pyrenees.
Storm #1 continues Thursday morning with additional rain and high-elevation snow showers in the western Alps. Up to 10 cms is possible before the storm wraps up Thursday afternoon. We'll have just a short break before the next storm arrives Friday morning. The models remain consistent yet another day with a southerly storm track. There have been very few Sudstau storms this year and the resorts favored by this storm type are suffering, with well below average depths. This storm should help improve that and provide a few powder days as well.
Models have remained consistent on snow totals too, with a wide area of 40 - 80 cms in the southern Italian/Swiss Alps and perhaps the southern French Alps too. The northern Alps will see a solid snowfall as well with a favorable wind direction as the storm starts to depart the region. The latest snow forecast from the European model is below.
This storm will stick around through Monday morning before another weak and fast-moving storm arrives Tuesday morning. This looks like a minor event with 5 - 15 cms across most of the northern Alps.
Extended Forecast
We should dry out for at least a few days, if not more, as a ridge develops over central Europe. The models aren't in great agreement on what happens next, but the ridge could stick around for a week before the chance for snow returns.

- View the latest snow stake camera snapshot and hour-by-hour snowfall for the last 24 hours.
We have over 60 snow stake cameras available right now and we do our best to add new cams to OpenSnow if we can host them.
